Livraria Lello has traded continuously since 13 January 1906, when its neo-Gothic building, designed by engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves, opened at Rua das Carmelitas 144. The business dates back further still, to the 1869 Livraria Internacional de Ernesto Chardron, and was classified a National Monument by Portugal in 2026.
The interior is celebrated Portuguese neo-Gothic work: carved wooden bookcases, pointed arches with author busts by Romão Júnior, an eight-metre stained-glass skylight by Gerardus Samuel van Krieken, and the crimson spiral staircase.
The Guardian, CNN, Lonely Planet and Travel + Leisure, which ranked it #1 in 2015, have all called it one of the world's most beautiful bookshops. The Harry Potter link is a myth, though: J. K. Rowling said in May 2020 that she had never set foot inside. Owners Avelino and Aurora Pedro Pinto, of Grupo Lionesa, took full control in 2023 and founded the Livraria Lello Foundation in 2024.

Livraria Lello ticket prices depend on whether the voucher is deductible against a book, and whether it includes guided access or the Lello Foundation at Mosteiro de Leça do Balio. Prices are per person. The official channel's cheapest voucher starts at 12 €, and GetYourGuide's entry-plus-Foundation combo starts at 15 €. Voucher amounts deduct only against books bought the same day — Lello editions only, for the 15 € voucher. The Sala Gemma is reserved for Platina voucher holders.
Free entry rules
There is no general free-admission policy. The entry fee, introduced on 23 July 2015 to manage visitor numbers and fund conservation work, tripled book sales within three months. Children under 3 enter free but must be registered at the entrance; everyone else needs a valid voucher, booked ahead or bought on site subject to slot availability.

Livraria Lello Opening Hours
Livraria Lello opens every day, including Sundays and most public holidays, from 09:00 to 19:30. Entry runs in 30-minute timed slots, and last admission is half an hour before closing.
The bookshop and Foundation close only on 25 December and 1 January. On 13 January the shop marks its anniversary with extended hours and special events, which still requires a voucher.
Peak hours are 11:00-14:00 and 16:00-18:00, especially Friday to Sunday, when day-trippers from Lisbon, Madrid and cruise ships at Leixões crowd the historic centre.
