What to see at Livraria Lello

Livraria Lello is a single room with a gallery, and it still fills an hour. The staircase is the reason to come, but the painted ceiling, the stained glass, the book tramway and the Gema Room upstairs are what make the visit more than a photograph. Here is the building floor by floor, what the voucher is worth inside, and what sits within five minutes of the door.

What to see at Livraria Lello

The building

The shop opened on 13 January 1906, designed by the engineer Xavier Esteves for the brothers José and António Lello in a neo-Gothic style with Art Nouveau details; the façade on Rua das Carmelitas carries two painted figures of Science and Art. Inside, the ground floor is the shop proper: carved shelves, a long counter and the rails of a small trolley line that once carried books across the floor. The staircase rises from the middle of the room, splits into two curved flights and meets again on the gallery, under a skylight of stained glass with the motto Decus in Labore. The ceiling that looks like carved wood is painted plaster, which surprises most visitors when they are told.

What the voucher buys

Every ticket is a voucher for a book, so the visit ends at the counter for most people. The shop's own imprint publishes classic titles in collectable editions, in Portuguese and English, priced so that the voucher covers a good part of them; the Harry Potter wall in a dozen languages is the other place the vouchers go. The voucher is deducted from one purchase and is not refunded in cash. Rules for timing, children and rescheduling are on the opening hours page.

  • Lello's own editions of Portuguese and world classics
  • Harry Potter in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and more
  • Books on Porto and Portugal in several languages
  • The voucher covers one purchase; the difference is paid at the counter

Within five minutes of the door

The Clérigos tower and church are across the street; the tower's 225 steps give the best view of the city's roofs and the Douro. The Carmo church with its azulejo side wall is two minutes uphill, beside the university and the Fonte dos Leões where the students gather in their black capes. Downhill, São Bento station and its tiled hall are a five-minute walk, and the Ribeira riverfront fifteen. A morning slot at the bookshop, the tower before lunch and the river in the afternoon is the standard first day in Porto, and the bookshop ticket is the only one of the three that has to be booked ahead.
